    Cost saving

“It was not necessary to make a full business calculation of the pay-back period. The ‘offsite’ waste reduction of 66% alone convinced the senior management …Thanks to the Caregrip™ anti-slip paper, the stacked products remain on the pallet and the downtime is reduced. In fact, there have been no stoppages caused by dropped products since the shift to PAL-Cut and Caregrip™ sheets. A welcome side-effect is the near elimination of fork-lift trucks in the packaging zone and that has been a wish for many years.”

Introduction

As Lindum Packaging, we were approached by a leading sugar manufacturer with a mission to make their packaging processes more sustainable. They wanted to reduce plastic usage and explore environmentally friendly alternatives for their packaging needs while ensuring pallet stability during transit.

The Challenge

Upon reviewing their current pallet wrap, we recommended a bio-based plastic film that retained both strength and clarity to showcase their branded packaging. The sugar manufacturer was keen to find a solution that could protect their products from damage and wastage.

One of their primary concerns was clarity. They wanted to enhance their pallet presentation by using clear plastic film that would highlight their iconic branding during transit. Their existing film had lines running through it, which obscured the packaging.

The Solution

After conducting a thorough audit, we introduced the sugar manufacturer to our Bio range, a new high-strength bio-based plastic wrap made from natural polymers found in tall oil. This solution not only protected the environment but also reduced the CO² impact by 40% compared to equivalent petroleum-based stretch film. Additionally, it eliminated their Plastic Packaging Tax liability without compromising performance.

Following our advice, the manufacturer agreed to trial our sustainable, bio-based packaging. The Bio solution offered flexibility and robustness, ensuring pallet stability, just like traditional plastic wrap. Furthermore, the Bio film was fully transparent, allowing their logo to remain visible in transit.

Results & Outcome

Before making the switch, the company was using 120g of plastic. With the Bio film, they now use only 60g, resulting in a 50% reduction. There was no difference in overall quality or stretch compared to the non-renewable solutions made from crude oil, making it an excellent choice for companies aiming to improve sustainability.

The client, when comparing the Bio solution to their previous film, commented, “The performance of the Bio film is identical to the previous non-sustainable stretch film we were using, and the clarity of the product means our branding can be clearly identified throughout transit.”

In the world of logistics, sustainability and plastic usage are vital considerations for many companies, and we, at Lindum Packaging, are proud to have been able to address both of these concerns for our client.
