Uncover hidden cost savings of up to 66% in your packaging operations.

Cutting your packaging costs isn’t about buying the cheapest products on the market but buying the right product and implementing it correctly.

The Hidden Costs of Cheap Packaging

Whilst cheaper packaging may appear to save you money, it is likely having a significant negative impact to your bottom line.

Why? Cheap packaging is, more often than not, poor quality and this could potentially be destructive to your business operations.

How?

  • Downtime as a result of snapping.
  • Reduced load stability leading to movement in transport and damages during transit.
  • Increased packaging consumption due to limited performance.

Implementation and optimisation

After selecting the correct product, it is important to ensure it is implemented correctly and optimised. Optimisation will ensure that it is running as effectively and efficiently as possible which will reduce downtime and waste. On average we have helped our customer achieve a saving of 27% by working with them to implement transit packaging correctly.

Could you save two thirds of your packaging costs?

Reduce Packaging Costs and Increase Profit

There’s a lot that can be done to optimise your transit packaging to reduce packaging costs and have a positive impact on your profit. Lindum work with global manufacturers day in day out to deliver packaging cost savings and improved efficiencies across the supply chain that all benefit the bottom line.

Packaging Cost Reduction Mistakes

With decades of knowledge and expertise in the packaging industry our specialist team are highly trained to evaluate your packaging operations to deliver real-world savings. So many of the most common mistakes we see when conducting a packaging audit are easily fixed with small, simple changes that not only save you money but deliver long term benefits.

Common Packaging Mistakes That Are Costing You Money

Applying more stretch film as a solution to pallet instability

Whilst applying more film may get you better stability, it is not a sustainable or cost-effective solution. By optimising your machine settings, wrap pattern and materials you can fix instability issues without using additional stretch film and in some cases even using less. It is important to test any changes to packaging using an approved method such as our Mobile Pallet Stability Test Lab.

Using the wrong gauge film for the goods you are wrapping

Gauge is the thickness of the stretch film, and this is especially important when wrapping heavy and awkward loads, to improve stability and avoid puncturing the wrap. However, we often see businesses using an over specified film for their requirements and simply by switching to a thinner film, notable cost savings can be made. For example, we worked with a company wrapping boxes of crisps with a 17-micron film, which was unnecessary as their pallets only weighed around 100kg and had no awkward obtrusions. By reducing this to a thinner 10-micron film, we managed to reduce the weight of the stretch film used to below 80g and therefore make them huge cost savings.

Using the wrong type of film for your pallet wrapping machinery

Another mistake we often see is using the wrong type of film for your wrapping machinery. Using a power pre-stretch film on a core brake machine is hugely inefficient and by switching to the correct pre-stretched film, massive savings can be made. Our Transit Packaging Audit will identify any opportunities for cost reduction and our team will work with you closely to implement the solutions successfully.

Incorrect machine settings

Optimising your machine settings will reduce the chance of snapping and therefore remove unnecessary downtime. The correct machine settings will also mean that your stretch film is being stretched to it optimum percentage meaning it is being used efficiently and as cost effectively as possible.

Focusing on cost per roll or kg

Calculating and comparing stretch film costs based on cost per roll or kg is an inaccurate representation. We recommend measuring cost per pallet. This helps to show how a film that is cheaper per roll/kg may be more expensive when cost is calculated per pallet than a higher quality film which costs more per roll/kg. This is because a cheap, low-quality film will have very limited performance meaning more is required to wrap every pallet and to achieve pallet stability.

Unstable pallets

Pallet instability is the biggest cause of movement in transport. This means that, by transporting unstable pallets, you are risking product damage during transport which is an unnecessary cost. Not only is there the loss of damaged goods but also the less obvious, associated costs such as clean up and rework costs as well as the cost of redelivery. Fixing pallet instability issues is an important step to reduce costs and approved testing methods such as our EUMOS accredited Mobile Pallet Stability Test Lab will help you to identify and solve this problem.

    Cost saving

“It was not necessary to make a full business calculation of the pay-back period. The ‘offsite’ waste reduction of 66% alone convinced the senior management …Thanks to the Caregrip™ anti-slip paper, the stacked products remain on the pallet and the downtime is reduced. In fact, there have been no stoppages caused by dropped products since the shift to PAL-Cut and Caregrip™ sheets. A welcome side-effect is the near elimination of fork-lift trucks in the packaging zone and that has been a wish for many years.”
