Case Studies – Thornton’s
Task:
Lindum were asked to assess current packaging processes and identify opportunities for improvement and costs savings, whilst at the same time suggesting a more environmentally friendly solution for wrapping pallets.
Findings:
The pallet wrapping machine is a Lantech power pre-stretch type machine. The film in use was a blue 17mu film supplied in 16kg rolls on a 1.718kg cardboard core. We ran trials with our blue Carestretch™ 551 with BioZ, an oxo-biodegradable film designed specifically for the type of machine Thornton’s are running. We altered the machine settings to make use of the higher performance of the Carestretch™ film which reduced the amount of wrap per pallet from 182g to 94g, a 48.4% reduction in the amount used. The higher tension also increased the pallet containment force, making each pallet more stable and secure.
Results:
- Less cost as increased load retention leads to fewer damages
- Less waste through 48.4% reduction in amount of pallet wrap used which is more than 14 tonnes less polythene to landfill every year
- Less environmental impact due to the oxo-biodegradable BioZ film that will oxo-biodegrade naturally in a 1-2-year timeframe with no harmful micro bead residue
- Less downtime as fibres in the film reduce significantly film breaks and snaps.
